Is the warehouse ready for the high season?
Every fall, the same pattern repeats itself: order volumes rise, staffing is stretched, and the warehouse becomes the bottleneck no one saw coming. For many Norwegian businesses, the period from Black Week to New Year's is the most important – and most vulnerable – part of the year. The question is not whether the high season is coming, but whether your warehouse is actually equipped to handle it.
Why the peak season reveals weaknesses
A warehouse that functions well during a normal week can collapse under pressure when volume doubles or triples. The most common symptoms we see in unprepared businesses:
Mispicking is increasing sharply. When the pace is increased and temporary personnel are deployed, the error rate in picking increases – and each mispicked order costs both in returns, shipping and customer trust.
No real-time inventory overview. Without an updated status of what is actually available where, you end up with oversold items, unnecessary backorders, and frustrated customers waiting for something that is actually out of stock.
Onboarding seasonal employees takes too long. With systems that require a lot of training, valuable hours are lost before new hands actually contribute to throughput.
Receiving becomes a bottleneck. Increased inflow of goods meets the same capacity as the rest of the year, and the goods remain in receiving instead of quickly getting onto the shelves and on to the customer.
What a modern WMS solves
InStock is built to provide full control from receipt to shipment – precisely the chain that is put under the most pressure during the peak season.
With barcode and location-based picking on Android terminals, picking errors are greatly reduced, regardless of the individual picker's experience. The system guides the user to the correct location and confirms the correct item, allowing even seasonal employees to be productive and accurate from day one – without weeks of training.
Real-time inventory means you always know exactly what’s available, so your online store and other sales channels display the correct status. This reduces overselling and the costly, trust-eroding situations where a customer orders something that isn’t in stock.
Efficient receiving flow ensures that goods are quickly registered and made available for picking, rather than sitting around waiting. This is especially critical in the period just before the peak season, when deliveries from suppliers often arrive more frequently and in greater volume than usual.
A checklist before the high season begins
Before the next wave of orders hits the warehouse, it's worth asking yourself some specific questions:
Do we have real-time inventory overviews across all sales channels, or are the numbers updated manually and with a delay? Can new seasonal employees pick correctly and efficiently from the first shift, or does it require days of training? Do we know where in the receiving process goods typically get stuck, and do we have the capacity to handle increased volume without stopping? Do we have a system that provides alerts before an inventory issue becomes a customer complaint, rather than afterwards?
If the answer to several of these is no, it's a clear sign that your inventory isn't ready – and that the peak season will cost more than it needs to, in the form of returns, extra shipping costs, and lost customers.
Start preparing now, not in November
The most common mistake businesses make is waiting to address inventory challenges until they are already in the middle of the season. By then it is too late to implement new routines or a new system without compromising operations just when they are most critical.
With InStock in place well in advance of the peak season, you can enter the busiest months with control instead of firefighting – and spend your energy on meeting demand, not cleaning up after it.
